Performance by final exam.

Contents: Basic concepts of local networks. Special properties of radio channel in the application contetxts of local networks like residential rooms,industry locations and offices. WLAN solutions of ISM frequency area, IEEE 802.11, HIPERLAN, Bluetooth, MBS. Development trends of wireless local network techniques: faster data speed, ad-hoc networks, interation with mobile networks.

Mobile Telecommunications I (3 cu)

Lectures and exercises: 18+9 h

Performance by final exam and design work. Project work have to be returned before exam.

Network Security

Lectures: Lectures 40 h, demonstrations 20 h, examination.

Contents: Security risks and threats form a major obstacle to the expanding utilisation of information networks and to the diversification of the services provided by them. The increased use of networks has also brought along questionable and even criminal activities in them, and both individual people and various organisations have suffered from the damage caused by data system break-ins and viruses. This course introduces modern solutions to the problems of network security. We get familiar with the structure of networks, basic concepts of information security, encryption, cryptographic algorithms and protocols as well as security strategies on different levels of the network. The security issues related to applications (e-mail, electronic commerce) and firewalls are also covered during the course.

Data Security in Wireless Communication

Lectures: Lectures 40 h, examination and essay (lenght approx. 2 pages).

Contents: Wireless data communication is rapidly becoming more common and it will be used to an increasing extent in everyday functions such as commerce and information acquisition. The course focuses on the security problems that are not met in conventional network environments.
